Question 30 on the Long Form Census generates misinformation.
Secular groups across Canada ask non-believers to answer “no religion”
Question 30 of the 2026 Long Form Census asks respondents to name their childhood religion rather than their current religion or non-religion. Since many people have left religion behind, this question gives a falsely large statistical number of current religious people in Canada.
Secular Humanist groups across Canada are reaching out to ask non-religious respondents to check the “no religion” box in response to Question 30 on the 2026 Long Form Census.
As a more permanent solution, Centre for Inquiry Canada, Humanists Canada, and Secular Connexion are iobbying Statistics Canada to get the question changed for the 2031 Census

Des groupes laïques à travers le Canada demandent aux non-croyants de répondre « pas de religion »
La question 30 du recensement long de 2026 demande aux répondants de nommer leur religion d’enfance plutôt que leur religion ou non-religion actuelle. Puisque beaucoup de gens ont abandonné la religion, cette question donne un nombre statistique faussement élevé de personnes religieuses actuelles au Canada.
Des groupes humanistes laïcs à travers le Canada demandent aux répondants non religieux de cocher l’option « pas de religion » en réponse à la question 30 du recensement long de 2026.
Comme solution plus permanente, Centre for Inquiry Canada, Humanistes Canada et Connexion Séculière sollicitent Statistique Canada pour que la question soit modifiée pour le recensement de 2031.
